Through this course, you’ll gain in-depth knowledge of spirit production—from raw material processing to post-distillation techniques—while developing the tasting skills needed to accurately assess and describe spirits. By combining theory with guided tastings, you’ll confidently analyze why spirits look and taste the way they do and what sets them apart.

Spirits Samples:

All in-class wine samples are included in the registration cost.
We taste over 60 Spirits Samples in class.

What's Included:
  • A hard copy version of the Level 3 Study Pack, with a study guide and ‘Understanding Spirits: Explaining Style and Quality’ text, Workbook, and S.A.T. card.  
  • The Study Pack will be given to you on the first day of class. (early pick-up can be arranged after registration)
  • Exam fees.
  • All in-class tasting samples.
Tasting Glasses: You are required to bring 6 ISO tasting glasses to each class.

If you do not already have a 6-pack, they can be purchased thru Statera and you will receive them at your first class.

What You Will Learn:

Understand the principal factors involved in spirits production and how they influence style and quality.

  1. Describe how raw materials are processed in spirits production.
  2. Explain the processes used during fermentation, distillation, and post-distillation in spirits production.
  3. Analyze how choices related to raw materials, fermentation, distillation, and post-distillation impact the style and quality of spirits.

Understand the key characteristics and labeling terms of selected global spirits, and how legal frameworks and production choices influence their style and quality.

  1. Describe the style and quality of selected global spirits.
  2. Explain the legal framework for selected global spirits and how it influences their style and quality.
  3. Apply production knowledge to explain how decisions made at each key stage impact the final product.

Understand the key characteristics of other named global spirits, their labelling terms, and key production choices.

  1. Describe the typical style of other named global spirits.
  2. Define legally regulated and commonly used labelling terms.
  3. Identify key legally defined and/or optional production choices made during their production.

Describe the key characteristics of selected global spirits and assess their quality level.

  1. Use the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Spirits® to describe key characteristics.
  2. Identify a spirit’s quality level, provide supporting reasons, and determine its category.
